Tornadoes tear through Midwest, leaving widespread power outages

Parts of the Midwest are cleaning up after tornadoes struck earlier in the week, while the storms moved on to the Mid-Atlantic on Friday.

It’s a little hard to focus on To Kill A Mockingbird when there’s a tornado right outside my window.

A tornado in Jackson County, Tenn., on Thursday stripped away the roof of a high school gym, WZTV in Nashville reported Friday. Buildings in Alabama and Illinois also sustained structural damage, according to local reports.

“We laid on our stomachs and held onto a metal gate,” said Tom Barger of Pike County, Ill. “Before long the building was completely gone that was on top of us.”

The Associated Press reports 60 mile-per-hour wind gusts caused widespread power outages in Illinois:

The National Weather Service issued a tornado watch for parts of Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina and Delaware on Friday, but the watch was lifted around 1 p.m. Jason Samenow of the Capital Weather Gang is providing live updates on the squall here.

Meanwhile, a tornado watch remains for parts of eastern North Carolina:
