DOLPHINS WIN, 27-21, IN WEMBLEY

Reserve quarterback Dave Archer scored on a four-yard play with 1:28

remaining to give the Miami Dolphins a 27-21 victory over the San

Francisco 49ers in an NFL preseason game at London's Wembley Stadium

last night.

Archer, taking advantage of a personal foul against the 49ers, faked

a handoff and ran the other way around left end to cap the Dolphins'

second rally of the second half. The Dolphins fell behind, 21-20, late

in the third quarter and the 49ers held that lead until the winning

A capacity crowd of 70,500 turned England's national soccer shrine

into a football carnival as they cheered both teams in the third

NFL-sponsored "American Bowl" held here.

Although the game was full of penalties and incomplete passes, it was

on par with other preseason games. Star quarterbacks Dan Marino of the

Defensive tackle John Mandarich, a sentimental favorite to make the

team, gave up and left camp in LaCrosse, Wis.

Mandarich, 6 feet 4 and 280 pounds, played four seasons in the CFL

before signing as a free agent with the Saints. He won attention with

his story of his parents' flight from religious persecution in

Yugoslavia and the hardships they endured before establishing a home in

With incumbent starter Tony Elliott, second-year veteran Pat Swoopes

and third-round draft choice Tony Stephens all listed ahead of him,

Mandarich had little chance to make the Saints' roster.

Also, troubled cornerback Reggie Sutton got a third chance yesterday,

signing a one-year contract and vowing that this time he won't let his

personal life stifle his football career.

Sutton was a fifth-round draft choice of the Saints in 1986, but he

was barred from minicamp because of a positive test for marijuana. He

underwent a detoxification program and joined the team for the 1986

season. But last November he was put on a reserve roster for a

nonfootball problem and sat out four weeks. He rejoined the team for the

final game of the regular season and the playoff game, but was waived

after the season.

Rookie Tom Tupa, expected to make the team as a punter after leading

the nation last year with a 47 yard average, has moved up to No. 3

quarterback on the team's depth chart after an impressive showing in a

scrimmage.
